June 22nd, 2009Podcast – Rob Nicholson
Rob Nicholson and I talk about layoffs, taking accountability for your career and the changing nature of work.
Rob and I have been friends for several years although professionally we have not crossed paths often. Living on different sides of the marketing world, he in product management and me on the client service side, we both bring unique perspectives to each other’s work.
Rob and I both were laid off earlier this year and unsuprisingly have spent a lot time talking about what to do next and how we want work to work for us. This podcast captures some of those ideas. Enjoy.
Cheers…Chris

Hi Chris, I agree completely with you that there does need to be focus. Especially with people’s attention spans getting shorter and shorter thanks to the subconscious conditioning brought on by twitter and text messaging, everything needs to speak simply, concisely and directly about that which they are focusing on, or else it’s probably just going to be tuned out.
As for the nature of work – that of the free agent nation – I with you there again as well. Talking to recruiting agencies, it’s clear that freelance/contract work is king. No one wants to commit long-term since there’s not enough stable, consistent work, but as well, because companies have wisened up fromthe cost management perspective sa you guys have mentioned. Why keep someone on the payroll when projects are on and off. Just like most services these days, everything, including human resources, is going the on-demand route. Service consumers want their hands on a tap with easy access and quick response, and internal HR mgmt has become the same.
Enjoyed the podcast, and looking forward to more.
Cheers,
Sam
